The Pavement needs Journalists!

Apart from one very part-time coordinator, we are all - journalists, editors, photographers, medical and legal advisers, accountant - unpaid volunteers. (Our journalists are staff or freelance on trade and consumer magazines, broadsheets and red tops during the day.) A team of rough sleepers distribute 4,500 copies to London's day centres, hostels, homeless medical facilities, soup kitchens, winter shelters and Homeless Persons Units.

A number of our stories have been picked up by the BBC and the broadsheets, and we have a growing reputation within the homelessness sector.

We are currently working with Liberty, Housing Justice and Zacchaeus 2000 towards a homeless human rights campaign, and would be very grateful if any journalism students were prepared to get involved.

Over 40 rough sleepers affected by councils 'move-ons' policies have come forward, and we urgently need to get their stories transcribed. Liberty will take a test case against one of the worst offenders. Zacchaeus 2000's barristers will then obtain a judicial review of another's policies. Liberty, The Pavement and Housing Justice are also working on a pocket guide to human rights.

If you are interested in meeting and interviewing some of our readers in a day centre (several have volunteered space), please get in touch via  valerie.stevenson@blueyonder.co.uk  or webmaster@thepavement.org.uk
The Pavement will cover the story as it develops, so we also offer the opportunity to become involved in a professionally run, though unpaid, magazine.
