Creative Competition
Closing Date: 13 January 2010
This month Rich Mix hosts Voices of Freedom, a series of spoken word, music and dramatic events all about liberty.
To celebrate, together with Spinebreakers, we’re offering YOU the chance to be part of the programme – and nab yourself a few free books into the bargain.
To enter
We’re looking for the most rousing, the most inspiring and the most memorable creative material on the subject of freedom. Whether it’s your best beats, stupendous speech, top track, photo or short film – we want to hear it.
There are three age categories: 13–15 years, 16–18 years, and 19–21 years.
You can upload:
• A written speech
• Original piece of music (no longer than 5 minutes)
• Short film (no longer than 5 minutes)
The prize:
Written speech winners will be invited to perform their piece at Rich Mix and on Colourful radio. Film and music winners will have their work exhibited in the Rich Mix Bar.
And all winners will get their hands on copies of Penguin’s No Easy Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela, Penguin Book of 20th Century Speeches and Great Speeches: Words that Made History.

Film: Malcolm X
Mon 18 Jan/ 7pm/ £5
Spike Lee’s acclaimed biopic of the controversial and influential black activist Malcolm X starring Denzel Washington. The film takes us through his inauspicious beginnings and imprisonment, through to his conversion to the Nation of Islam and his later rejection of their divisive teachings.

Theatre: Eclipse Theatre presents Michael X

Who was Michael X? Black power activist and political icon? Liar? Pimp? Murderer? Set at a political rally, Vanessa Walters’ new play probes at the heart of black politics in the 1960s Britain and tells the ‘true story’ of Michael X.

In Conversation with: Ben Okri

Ben Okri has published 10 novels, including ‘The Famished Road’, as well as collections of poetry, short stories and essays. Awarded an OBE as well numerous other awards, Ben Okri comes to Rich Mix for one of our popular In Conversations.

Theatre: The Uninvited

The Uninvited is a performance tour de force telling the extraordinary stories of refugees and exiles, from all over the world, past and present. Performed by Elizabeth Mansfield, Olivier Award nominee for ‘Best Actress in a Musical’.

Music Denys Baptiste – Let Freedom Ring!

Stirring contemporary jazz with gospel, blues and Afro-Cuban music from Mercury/ MOBO award winning saxophonist Denys Baptiste, inspired by the spirit and rhythms of Dr Martin Luther King’s momentous I Have A Dream speech on its 40th anniversary.
