Rug competition
BARJIS
BARJIS is an award winning rug/interiors company based in London. It has been established since year 2000.We have undertaken countless international projects and build up a reputation for producing exclusive luxury rugs and interiors for the high end clienteles around the world.
Brief
the fine art of living…
To design a hand tufted rug in size 6ft by 4ft in 100% wool using maximum of 8 colours. It can be a wall hanging or a rug. The design should be contemporary, an original piece, have some commercial value and for a high end interior. It should be suitable for either a residential or commercial interior. All work should be printed out, on A4 if possible, and placed in a folder for presentation to judges for marking. Shortlisted finalists will be expected to print and mount their work to A3 size. This will be displayed at the Interiors show in January 2012. http://www.interiorsbirmingham.com
We will require you to submit an A4 sheet explaining your journey, your inspiration behind the design and what market would be suitable for your rug and why. Which interior can you visualise this rug/wall hanging for e.g. Hotel lobby area, restaurant, public building, home etc. Who would be your end client? What would be the estimated retail price for your piece? Please include a personal statement, this should include your contact details, age, where you studied, and your future aspirations.
Theme
Four Seasons
This years competition will be based on the four seasons, Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. The designer is required to select a season of their choice and summarise the beauty of that season within their design. It could be a personal experience they had during a holiday or event or something they felt during the beginning of a particular season. It could be a random feeling, a thought, a moment, an experience or something they saw on the streets or in a movie.
Barjis would like the designer to express their journey, feelings and emotions through their design. To express the beauty of that season through their work. The rug should be functional, contemporary and aesthetically pleasing.
Format for Submission
Submissions must be registered by one individual. If more than one person is to be credited with the design, then up to two additional designers can be listed - as long as they meet eligibility requirements. The Prizes will be awarded to the individual who is listed as “Submitter” on the entry form and will only be transferred to an individual other than the submitter at BARJIS’S discretion.

Hard copies of your designs only please, to assist the judges. Only at the end of the judging process will the names of the competitors be revealed to the jury.
You may also attach additional information to your design (maximum 250 words) Please put your name on any additional information.

Design Guidelines
• Your submission should be designed for BARJIS
• The design can be submitted in any A4 size
• The design must be wholly original designed exclusively for this competition.
• The rug will be produced using handtufted technique
• The rug will be made from 100% New Zealand wool
• The rug will be inspired by the Four Seasons but suitable for contemporary interiors (residential or commercial interiors)
Please note: We cannot return any submitted materials, though we can arrange for non-winning designs to be collected.
Prizes

Four shortlisted designs will be exhibited at Interiors 2012: http://www.interiorsbirmingham.com
The winner will be announced at Interiors 2012.
First Prize – The winner will go to China to learn rug production, their winning rug design will be promoted on the Barjis website, and will receive commission on any sales.
Judging Process
• Judges will make their decisions based on personal judgment, but taking into account the following attributes:
- Quality of presentation
- Originality
- Feasibility and suitability
- Marketability
• Entries deemed ineligible will be removed from consideration.
• Eligible submissions will be marked with a registration number, as will the optional one page of Additional Information.
• Each judge will examine every submission and will indicate the numbers of their preferred designs on a form.
• The entry receiving the most votes will be the winner.
• In case of a tie, a second round of judging will be held to consider the tied entries only.
• The judging panel’s decisions are confidential and final.
• Each judge will have the opportunity to select at his/her own discretion, a particular design which in their opinion deserves a special mention.

The entry fee is £25.00 Cheques made out to UBM please and sent with your entries to the address below.
One entry may be submitted per person for the one entry fee.
Who can enter?
By entering this competition, you agree to the unconditional acceptance of the rules and regulations set forth by this Design Competition.
The competition is open to students aged 18 and over. Students must have a current enrolment in the UK or Ireland at 1st March 2010.
Individuals known to or related to any of the competition judges or staff are ineligible to enter.
Closing Date
All submissions must be sent to A Hollyer 25, The Limes, Harston, Cambridge CB22 7QT and received by 5pm October 7th 2011.
Any submissions received after this deadline will not be considered.
In addition
Each element of each entry must be clearly named with the student’s name on the
reverse
• Prizes are non-transferable or refundable. There is no cash alternative.
• It is anticipated that the 1st, prize-winners will be featured in publicity
surrounding the announcement of the winning entries, and should be prepared to be photographed and interviewed, if required.

Each entrant must warrant that it owns the copyright, trademark and other intellectual property rights in their design.

BARJIS retains the right to reproduce any and all parts of submissions for the purpose of publication, and to exhibit results in any media whatsoever.
Travel Details
** “one week trip” is defined as a return trip, economy fare on a commercial carrier, plus 6 nights hotel accommodation in a four star hotel in Beijing. BARJIS will arrange reservation and payment for such trip. The competition organisers do not accept any liability for the winner’s safety during the trip, and the winner will have to demonstrate that they have adequate travel insurance and all recommended inoculations before commencing travel
