Planning A Group

Deciding the focus of the group
  • Will it provide an opportunity for artists to review their practice and their ideas on a
  • regular basis?
  • Is it intended to provide mutual support for professional development?
  • Will it provide a forum for the debate of ideas, concepts, ethics and issues of
  • importance to artists?
  • Do you want it to stimulate ideas for a new group project or initiative?
  • Perhaps you want the forum to strengthen the connections in an existing team of artists or designers who work together on a regular basis?
  • Do you want to use the forum to prepare for a group exhibition or show – work in progress?
  • Or something else….?

What will the structure of the group be?
  • Size
A Critique Forum can can be used with as few as two people, also known as co-mentoring. However, you might get a better mix and pool of questions with more so a group of 5-6 maximum is ideal.
  • Regularity
Do you want this to be a one-off occasion, or would you like to organise something on a regular basis? For example, for a critique group, meeting regularly over a period of time can be hugely beneficial in helping with motivation and creating milestones to work towards.
  • Location
The location you choose can depend on the size of your group, but being easy to reach and available/open at the times that you need it are quite important factors. A private room in a pub or restaurant, someone’s studio or a room in a library are examples of what could be a suitable venue.
