T-shirt Competition For Illustration Students

Introduction to the brand:
‘Nothing’ is a commercial advertising company based in Amsterdam. As part of their company they have a sub-group called ‘Nothing ventured’, which promotes small designers and gives them a podium to showcase their work.

‘Nothing Pink’ is my label under ‘Nothing Ventured’ I run a small children’s wear label for ‘Nothing’ in return for the free marketing and business support I get from them, as well as a small amount of funding to get the collection produced.

‘Nothing Pink’ is aimed at little girls ages 4-8. A gap in the market was recognised for non-gender biased clothing. For example, a typical little girls garment would be pink, frilly, with heart or flower details and quite a fussy style. ‘Nothing Pink’ uses fabric’s that are stretchy and practical, uses colours such as deep purple, red and black rather than pastel shades and uses designs and silhouettes that do not interrupt play, they are streamline and easy to move in and are not fussy and frilly.

Details of this label can be found on the ‘Nothing’ website (www.nothingamsterdam.com ) although it is still in very early stages.

Project requirements:
The collection consists of ten garments, which have been pattern cut and made up by a sample production team.
To compliment this collection I am commissioning you to make 5 t-shirt designs. The t-shirt designs must be within the spirit of the brand (remember no hearts or flowers!).
They must also be something that has never been seen on a children’s t-shirt before. I want something original and not too ‘kiddie’. This is chance to do something really creative. I have no specifications as to a particular style or medium, although a hand drawn ‘sketchy’ style is preferred. The designs can be big, covering the whole t-shirt, or more discreet, whatever you think looks the most aesthetic.

Please submit one design as a sample, you don’t have to spend a long time on it as long as it clearly shows your idea’s. I will choose to work more closely with whoever I feel understands the concept of the brand to produce the 5 t-shirts.

If your t-shirt idea gets picked (and it may be more than one person) then you will receive £50 cash as a small thank you. Your illustrations/design will be featured on the Nothing website, which gets thousands of hits a day and is viewed by major people in the advertising and branding industry as well as their previous clients such as coca cola, skoda and Mcdonalds to name a few.
Your t-shirts will also be marketed by Nothing and they have the potential to show these to major press companies, department stores and boutiques in Holland. They are also doing a photo shoot for the garments and t-shirts. Its not every day your work gets photographed by such a high standard of photographers, stylists and models and it would look great in your portfolio.
I hope to hear from you soon, if you have any questions about anything I’m always available by email on katiekinson@live.co.uk.
