Munjeet Singh
Web DesignerWhat have you been up to since leaving University of the Arts London?
Started work on contract basis as a web designer, then moved into a print design full time role. Then back into contracting as a web designer, now working full time as a senior interface designer.
Are there any particular skills that you have come to rely on?
I rely on core design principles, a questioning eye, and an understanding ear.
What, if anything, would you do differently?
Given the opportunity, I would have dabbled in different mediums. During my early career I was absolutely sure I wanted to be a web designer, and now I find employers see me in solely that light. It would now be difficult to experiment in 3D, Film and Motion Graphics on a commercial basis without participating in self-initiated projects first - for which I seldom have the time.
Did you feel prepared when you graduated? If not, was there anything else you wish you’d done, any opportunities you wish you’d seized?
I am glad I undertook several work experiences and would advise anyone to find a way to do the same. My work experiences were in the field of Science and Architectural Design - only to rule them out as a long term viable career choice. However, not having short-term work experiences in them would have almost certainly let to greater expenditure in time. Also, I have found unpaid work experiences to provide the most valuable insight into a career, helping to eliminate the temporary smokescreen of financial motive. Enjoying what I do, and having a strong passion for my field has never let me down in any way (including financially).
What would be your advice to a student graduating now?
Begin by being flexible, be willing to try and listen while your skills and knowledge are developing. Be prepared to stand by your rational as you develop and feel confident as you develop strong foundations.
