March 2009 UNITE Competition

BACKGROUND

This document is to give you a fuller background to the competition and the student accommodation provider UNITE

THE COMPETITION

Student accommodation provider UNITE is opening a series of new properties in London this year.

To celebrate, UNITE is inviting UAL Fine Art students to create new and original works.

Five different works will be selected from five different winners.

The works will be exhibited in the new properties this summer and used to raise awareness of UNITE’s new properties among students and the media.

Each winner will receive a £500 purchase prize.

INSPIRATIONAL LONDONERS

The works must be inspired by well known Londoners - or people who have had a profound effect upon the city.

It could be anyone as long as they have an inspiring, amusing, shocking or moving story to tell. That might be a well known figure or a lesser known person whose story you think deserves to be told.

You might also want to consider the locations the new properties are based in (see below).

You can choose any medium you wish.

SUBMITTING WORK

Please submit the following:

- If the work hasn’t been produced, sketches and details of materials you will use
- If the work has been produced, two photographs along with details of materials
- Dimensions and any installation requirements
- 150 words on the background to your inspirational Londoner
- Your name, course & college, address, telephone number and email

After submitting proposals, five winners will be selected and asked to produce the works (if they have not already been made).

TIMINGS

The deadline for proposals is Friday 8 May 2009 to the Central Saint Martin’s Fine Art Office, 6th Floor, 107-109 Charing Cross Road by 12 noon.

You will need to complete an agreement form when handing in your proposal (available from the Fine Art Office).

Winners will be selected by Andrew Watson, Jane Lee and UNITE the w/c 11 May 2009.

Winners will hand in the final work before the w/c 8 June 2009 for the work to be exhibited that week in one of UNITE’s London properties. 4 June is the estimated hand-in date but will be confirmed to the winners once they are chosen.

If you have any questions, please call Marie on 020 7514 7008.

Optional
DIGITAL ACTIVITY
If you wish, you can use digital media to document the creative process and tell the story behind the work you produce.

It is entirely up to you how you approach this. You could, for example:

• Create an online diary about your experiences with the project, charting motivations, the creative approach and production

Tools you could consider using include:

• Blog media – using a service such as www.storytlr.com, www.posterous.com or www.tumblr.com to tell a story using a blend of text, multi-media and photography aggregated from other online sources
• Visual media – using tools such as www.qik.com, www.flickr.com, www.picasa.com, www.vimeo.com to capture and present video and photographic material
• Social networks – engage with, motivate and involve the fans and friends of your muse, creating a participatory experience via services such as www.myspace.com and www.facebook.com. Likewise, other online media and communities around your chosen subject

If you do decide to document your work in this way include URLs for any online presence established in your submission.
