Making Conversation

Brief introduction and explanation of who you are (and I really mean brief – at this stage you are nothing more than an interruption in the middle of their busy day – they do not want your life history):

"Hello, my name is Jennie Cresswell and I’m a final year student in Graphic Design at LCC."

Explain how you got their details and why you’ve chosen to contact them:
"I found your contact details on your organisations website and am really impressed with the work you are producing, especially…"

Tell them why you’re calling:
"I will soon be starting to look for graduate jobs, and would really value some input from someone in the business about my portfolio, and whether I’ve structured it appropriately, and what I could do to improve it."

Make it clear that you understand they are busy, you can fit around their schedule, and you would really appreciate their time:
"I do appreciate that you are really busy, but I would be really grateful for ten minutes of your time. I could come to your offices, or I could buy you a coffee somewhere – whatever would be easiest for you."
