Digital Friday
Following the success of ‘Digital Friday’ last year, Carnegie Sporting Words Festival returns on Friday 13th November 2009 and we would like to invite you and your students to attend the Friday events, now entitled Success in Sports Media.
This free event will take place in the internationally renowned sporting venue, Headingley Carnegie Stadium, home of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Rugby League team Leeds Rhinos, and Rugby Union team Leeds Carnegie.
The kind support of Leeds Metropolitan University has enabled this unique opportunity to learn from the professionals in the Sports Media industry to be completely free.
We have broadened the appeal of ‘Digital Friday’ from last year to a more practical careers-based approach. The programme of industry seminars is aimed at students of sports journalism, marketing and event management. It will provide a forum to highlight and discuss current trends in sports journalism, such as: the benefits and difficulties of working with constantly evolving technology and the media, the process of brand building, politics and sports and the challenges surrounding the London 2012 Olympics.
The Programme:
10.30 – 11.15 am
An introductory lecture from Leeds Metropolitan University’s Dr Dan Laughey, entitled ‘The Sports Digital Media-scape’ will explore the current provision and trends in Sports Media particularly considering Sports Media in relation to the recent ‘Digital Britain’ White Paper.
11.15 – 11.45 am
Ben Fry, Head of Station at Yorkshire Radio, will review his career to date and his role at Yorkshire Radio. It will take the form of a Q&A session hosted by Zoe Ward from McCormicks, one of the leading sports law firms in the UK whose clients include the Premier League, Leeds United FC, and many high profile sportsmen and women.
11.45 – 11.55 am
Break (Please bring money for refreshments if desired.)
12.00 – 12.45 pm
A representative from The Lift Agency will discuss Sports Marketing and brand building. They will provide a realistic view of the sports marketing industry - from glamour to golf tees, recent changes in the field, how technology has impacted on marketing, where the future lies, and of course hints and tips of how to get experience, important qualities and how to get that break into the field.
12.45 – 1.15 pm

It will take the form of a Q&A session hosted by Zoe Ward from McCormicks, one of the leading sports law firms in the UK whose clients include the Premier League, Leeds United FC, and many high profile sportsmen and women.
