Say No to Violence Against Women - Create an ad for the United Nations

The Say No to Violence against Women ad competition opens for submissions on 8 March 2011, International Women’s Day, and ends at midnight (CET) 31 May 2011.

The first prize is 5000€ and the winner will be selected by a jury composed of experts including Jacques Séguéla vice president of advertising giant Havas.

The winners will be announced on 25 November 2011– the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women.

The competition, which is part of the UN Secretary-General’s Campaign UNiTE to end Violence against Women, invites Europeans in 48 countries, professionals and non-professionals, to create an ad which states: “No to Violence against Women.”

The organizers are the UN Regional Informational Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels in cooperation with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN Women), and UN information offices around Europe.

Why you should care:

• Up to 70% of women experience violence in their lifetime
• 1 in 5 women is a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime.
• Between 500,000 to 2 million people are trafficked annually. Women and girls account for about 80% of the detected victims.
• Between 100 to 140 million girls and women have experienced female genital mutilation
• In the DRC, at least 200,000 cases of sexual violence have been documented since 1996
