Practical guide to Being an Artist

Speakers: Rosalind Davis Nick Kaplony (Artsquest) and Jack Hutchinson (AIR online editor)
Tips and advice about the practical aspects of being an artist; basic good practice, applying for competitions, getting exhibitions, how to approach galleries/ clients (networking, portfolio, online presence, marketing etc) and how you can create a peer network. This session will also outline the importance of online networking and the benefits of facebook, twitter and artists talking.

How to talk and write about your work

With Jane Boyer and Becky Hunter
Go through the key points of writing about your own work in a way that has artistic integrity, description, art historical/theoretical positioning and clarity of phrasing in a way that is relevant to your audiences.

How do you move from the visual into the verbal? Based on what is written in the artist statement, the transition to a verbal expression of theory, historical reference and personal exploration in your work can give a deeper insight into your practice and working method.

How to market and sell your work

Rosalind Davis is joined by a panel of guests, including a gallerist and collector.
Maximise exhibitions, open studios, projects and opportunities and gain and build your collectors and new audiences through promoting and marketing your work which is essential to attarct interests of galleries etc.
Are you making the most out of your exhibitions or open studios events? Do you know how to price your work and can you talk to other people about your work? How can you find and nurture your collector base and what are galleries looking for from artists?How can you get noticed and stay that way in a competitve artworld.

In discussion with galleries and collectors we will run through what are succesful and unsuccessful approache and cover networking, marketing and tips.

Practical Workshops

A-Z Oil Painting with Enver Gursev
A week long course to hone for artists at all levels who wish to learn or refresh their knowledge and skills and explore their creativity with a professional artist and head of Oil Painting Short Courses at Univerity of the Arts.
£175 for DIY Educate members.
£250 for non members

Course Dates:
April. Monday 18th to Friday 22nd.
Weekend classes. 10am-4pm, 5 sessions. Saturdays 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd 30th of April.
May. Monday 9th to Friday 13th.

PHOTOSHOP & DIGITAL WORKFLOW with Arnold Borgerth
This is an intermediate to advanced course designed to help artists, designers etc to understand digital image and the digital workflow to better control it and to create high quality images for online, print etc.
5 sessions of 3hrs each, every Tues and Thu from 22/02 until 08/03, from 18:00 to 21:00
£100 for DIY members
£150 for non-members

Photographing Your Artwork
All artists need to know how to take good quality images of their artwork whether it be for competitions, websites, exhibitions or catalogues. An essential toolkit led in plain English!
One 3hr session – Saturday 12/03/11, 10am to 1pm
£40 for DIY Members
£50 for non-members

All artists need to know how to prepare good images whether it is for competitions, websites, exhibitions or catalogues. An essential toolkit led in plain English!
