Catherine Moseley-Hyza

Communication Consultant

What have you been up to since leaving University of the Arts London?

During and after my course I was working for a major magazine publisher as Production Assistant, later Production Editor. I wrote my dissertation on environmental challenges in the Publishing Industry and so went on to work for an environmental charity as all-round Communications Consultant. I have now set-up my very own environmental publishing/communications consultancy business, which is going tremendously well.

Are there any particular skills that you have come to rely on?

Willingness to learn, keep an open mind and work your way up. Really listening and figuring out what people (clients, boss, colleagues) want to say. Figuring out what's best for the project/magazine/book.

Did you feel prepared when you graduated? If not, was there anything else you wish you’d done, any opportunities you wish you’d seized?

I would definitely recommend working in the industry whilst studying - only that way did I feel prepared. Maybe I would have used the Colleges' connection to the London School of Economics a little bit more to intensify the business angle but I don't think I knew about it at the time

What, if anything, would you do differently?

I would go self-employed sooner.

What would be your advice to a student graduating now?

Find yourself a niche. A personal interest, a hobby, specific knowledge in an area can give you an edge over the competition.
