BBC 21

During the school summer holidays, 21CC London is working in collaboration with the BBC’s Poetry Season and BBC Radio 1 to bring audiences a multiplatform experience to be seen and heard across radio and the web. This unique opportunity will give young people at 21CC the chance to create an animation to accompany a poetry reading which will then be put on the BBC Poetry and Radio 1 websites. We are working with the production team behind Rob da Bank’s show on Radio 1 to animate readings that will be performed by celebrities for his Book @ Bedtime feature. As part of the Poetry Season guests in this slot will be reading specially chosen poems aiming to inspire people to discover poetry.

We are looking for young people aged 15-19 who are interested in art or graphic design. With tuition from industry experts, these workshops will arm the participants with invaluable skills such as storyboarding methods, and techniques for designing and creating stop motion animation. No experience of animating is necessary but artistic flair and a desire to learn are essential!

The dates of these workshops are as follows and we need one group of 16-20 young people per workshop:
21 July 2009
29 July 2009
18 August 2009
19 August 2009

The workshops will run from 10.30-15.30 at 21CC London, White City. Please email 21CC_London@bbc.co.uk  if you are interested, stating ‘Poetry Animation Workshops’ in the title.

BBC Poetry Season

This spring the BBC launches its landmark commitment to literature with a season dedicated solely to poetry. Some of the nation’s best loved poets and celebrities will take part in programmes on television, radio and online exploring the far reaching and compelling world of poetry. BBC listeners and viewers will be encouraged to go online and discover more about poetry on the Poetry Season’s dedicated website, which will feature a poetry search engine to find poems for any occasion or mood, a vote to discover the nation’s current favourite poet plus short films of celebrities talking about their own personal passion for poetry. It will also list events in your area and give tips from familiar faces such as Ian McMillan on what poetry can add to our busy lives.

Rob da Bank on BBC Radio 1

Rob da Bank's shows are an eclectic mix airing an astonishing variety of music from rising stars in the music world alongside old favourites. During the first half of his show you could hear anything from obscure David Bowie tunes to electro, techno and even folk. For this particular collaboration the second half of the show houses the Book @ Bedtime feature which we will be creating animations for. During this feature celebrity guests and musicians read extracts of books, poems or even diaries to help the audience fall gently to sleep. Whilst the chosen poems are being read on the show the animations created by your students will be available online for the audience to watch simultaneously.
