Baustelle Schaustelle / Art Award 2010

Baustelle Schaustelle invites young artists from all over Europe to
participate in a contest.

Designs are to be submitted under the heading
YOUR WORK X BAUSTELLE SCHAUSTELLE = 2010.

These concepts stand a chance of being implemented in 2010, Essen’s year as Capital of Culture.

A renowned jury will be responsible for selecting the works. The Off-Space Baustelle Schaustelle is a venue for young contemporary
art. Since autumn 2007, Brigitte Krieger, the project’s initiator, has been exhibiting works by young artists from all over North-Rhine Westphalia on a regular basis. This showroom in Brigittastraße, which was initially intended as a temporary experimental platform, has become established as a permanen exhibition venue.
Most of these shows, which occurred in cooperation with the artists, could only be carried out in this particular place due to their concepts and the nature of their implementation. In connection with these works, Baustelle Schaustelle was able to benefit individual artistic productivity by serving as a starting point for innovative ideas. Now, with regard to this exceptional
exhibition series in 2010, the important aim is to encourage artists not to simply present an existing work at Baustelle Schaustelle but to focus their attention on the venue in question.
Three works will receive awards. The prize for the most convincing entry is 1000 Euros. All three artists will be given the opportunity to present their works in a solo exhibition at Baustelle Schaustelle. Furthermore, these three artistic approaches will be documented and comprised in a publication [catalogue].
The challenge is to develop ideas regarding the specific venue Baustelle Schaustelle. In view of the cultural events occurring in 2010, the artists are called on to concern themselves with the history of the Ruhr Area. Instead of just being placed there, their works should form a connection with the area. The submitted works should be defined not only by geographical and historical references, but also by the artists’ individual approaches.
