ART STARS competition

By offering opportunities to artists through a commission-based project, and a week-long, in-studio session under the guidance of an ART STARS Mentor from 2010. Dedicated to young artists and designers, applicants are encouraged to submit a proposal that draws on Americana imagery interpreted through their own practice. Mediums may include painting, photography, video, light, sound, text as well as experimental approaches including 3D and performance.

A total of 16 successful candidates will experience working in a Mentor’s studio to create their star, which will later be exhibited on an extraordinary scale. Winners will receive a denim canvas to work with, €1,000 commission prize, and €500 towards materials cost. The completed works will be shown as part of the 2011 Polo Jeans Co. ART STARS campaign and eventually be auctioned with the proceeds aiding a charity of the artist’s choice. An ART STARS Council comprised of prominent figures in the arts, culture, and media industries will judge the submissions.

A series of talks by ART STARS mentors will be held at universities and creative spaces throughout Europe and aim to discuss the Mentors’ experiences in developing their artistic careers, their involvement in the ART STARS 2010 campaign, and are tailored toward individual interests in this area. They will also discuss suggested resources and opportunities of how to extend support beyond gallery representation, and how commission-based projects such as ART STARS can supplement and assist in supporting an artist’s practice.
