Art director opportunity in South Africa
I am currently working in South Africa amongst a project called "1000 pieces of humanity" and we work with the NGO "Life Line". The project is currently looking for British Art students to help within the project from any time of 1-3 months based in South Africa, starting as soon as possible.
South Africa is known as the 8th most dangerous country in the world, and this projects looks to show the international community that South Africa is actually trying to rehabilitate prisoners, amongst its criminal justice services. Students interested in the project will have to be willing to work amongst the correctional services, but at the same time all measures are in place to make the students as comfortable as possible.
"1000 pieces of humanity" started when two friends were murdered in consecutive months in South Africa. After these murders the families were not told that counselling was available due to the shortage amongst the South African Police. What this project hopes to achieve is to give families affected by crime in South Africa, closure, and to give prisoners a sense of outlet for their remorse. But also on a wider scale, to show that South Africans are committed to reducing the crime rate amongst repeat offenders.
In terms of the project, "1000 pieces of humanity" will be a canvass divided into a 1000 pieces. A thousand people that have been directly affected by crime in South Africa will be asked to paint their canvass, in the tones of the South African Flag. It will then be put together and exhibitited across the world, including the UK. The piece of art work will be on exhibition in 12 of the biggest international art galleries.
If any students are interested, please email Hazell Moore at hm257@bath.ac.uk
